Morgantown, W.Va. – Del. Joe Statler (R-Monongalia) has again been selected to serve as vice chair of the West Virginia House of Delegates Education Committee for the 2022 legislative session. No stranger to the committee, Statler served as vice chair in the 2018 legislative session.
Prior to serving in the legislature, Del. Statler served as a member of the Monongalia County Board of Education for more than a decade, and coming from an educationally rich community, he wants to further work to improve education statewide across West Virginia. “One of the biggest opportunities on the table for this session is strengthening early childhood education. The House of Delegates will look to add assistants in first- and second-grade classrooms where there are more than a dozen students per classroom,” suggested Statler.
Describing the legislation, Del. Statler said he believes the $68-million investment will help keep classrooms up to pace so that teachers can devote more attention to building success for all students, saying “This could be a game-changer for struggling students not to mention our teachers.”
During a recent legislative look-ahead hosted by the West Virginia Press Association, AARP West Virginia and West Virginia University’s university relations office, Del. Statler was optimistic and noted his support as worth trying to take up saying, “As a whole, this piece of legislation will be tremendously productive in this state as it allows more one-on-one with the students.”
The WV House Education Committee is chaired by Del. Joe Ellington (R-Mercer).
